BMW showed us a new home charging station that utilizes solar energy to reduce the electricity costs associated with EVs.
Called BMW Home Charging Services, it uses the same i Wallbox Pro system that was already presented by BMW last year. Basically this new system can utilize solar energy to charge an EV. If solar energy isn’t available, the home charging services will automatically charge at the cheapest off-peak rates. BMW estimates that users can save up to $800 dollars a year by using this system.

“With Home Charging Services, BMW is the first vehicle manufacturer to offer such a broad-based EV smart charging product,” BMW project manager Julian Lienich said. “Our aim is to make mobility as cheap as possible for users and to allow them to maximize their use of green power – but without having to organize everything themselves.”
This solar charging station also uses recycled EV batteries from former BMW i cars, like the MINI E. Energy gathered by this home storage system, like from the solar generator it’s mounted to, can be used to charge an electric vehicle or to meet household power needs.
