BMW has issued a software update for its i3 models equipped with a range-extender.
The range-extended i3 model has been suffering from an acceleration issue that was first reported by Consumer Reports. When the publication’s driver attempted to pass on a two-lane highway, acceleration on the i3 cut out while the battery was depleted. Consequent testing revealed that 0-60 mph acceleration went from 7.5 seconds to 40 seconds with the battery at empty.

The initial software was designed to start up the 34-hp gasoline engine when the battery is down to six percent, but the updated software will engage the range extender earlier to help reserve more charge in the battery. In addition, i3 owners will now be able to view additional details on the battery’s charge state while the navigation system will use topographical information to retain more reserve battery when driving uphill.
