BMW’s investment into its i sub-brand has helped it become one of the World’s Top Green Companies.
The annual list released by Newsweek has BMW as the top automaker when it comes to being green, earning a Newsweek Green Score of 72.2 percent. Coming in second place is Toyota, rising 57 spots to 35th place overall with a Green Score of 69.6 percent. The third automaker to make it onto the list is Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler at 73rd place overall and a Green Score of 63.2 percent.
The list ranks the world’s largest companies on corporate sustainability and environmental impact and is conducted in partnership with Corporate Knights Capital, HIP (Human Impact + Profit) Investor Inc. and leading sustainability minds from nongovernmental organizations and the academic and accounting communities. The evaluation was done using eight metrics to determine environmental performance with the companies being scored against their industry peers on each metric, including energy, water and waste levels.

Toyota released a statement regarding its second place finish among automakers, noting that the Japanese automaker saved over 93-million gallons of water in North America and reduced energy use by 22 percent at its North American manufacturing plants through its green initiatives.
Among the non-automakers on the list, the healthcare sector took the top three places with Biogen Inc. scoring 89.2 percent, Shire PLC scoring 85.1 percent and Allergan, Inc. earning a 84.2-percent score.
